Though she is intended for the king, Calista Thorne picks up a crossbow to defend her ancestral home, Blackbriar Keep, from a gang of landless knights. She even manages to sink a poison-tipped arrow into their commander, who survives long enough to conquer the Keep and claim Calista for his own. Now, with her father’s life at stake, Calista must nurse the brigand back to health, and the strangest thing happens: She finds herself fascinated by his tautly muscled body, and enthralled by his hotly whispered demands.

Ever since his father’s death, the fearsome warrior they call Torch has been consumed by his quest for revenge. Taking Blackbriar Keep is the first step in that plan, and—by the three gods—it won’t be the last. But after taking one look into Calista’s smoldering gray eyes, Torch discovers a passion nobler than retribution. He will fulfill his destiny and take her from the usurper king, even in his weakened state. For with Calista’s love, no man has ever felt more powerful.

An engaging historical fantasy romance with lots of intrigue. This first book of The Bastard Brotherhood series will draw the reader into Torch's surprising story of who he believes he is and why he fights as he does as well as Calista's decision of who she should wed. The King or this pretender. The background story explaining Torch is presented in a manner requiring the reader to pay attention and analyze the difference between what is fact and what is hearsay.

Furthermore the author setups up some very strong primary and secondary characters. With Torch and Calista as the hero and heroine the author creates them with very strong willed and diversified personalities that keep the reader guessing the outcome to their continued clashing.

On top of that the secondary characters are just as strongly written leading the reader to want more books to this series incorporating these very interesting people. I would love to say more about them but I don't want to give away any part of this book.

I give this 5 stars because of the strongly developed characters and the way the story is developed.

They say that once you reach your forties, you undergo some sort of mid-life crisis. That must have been what happened to Ashlyn Macnamara when she finally made up her mind to set down some of the stories that had been accumulating dust in the dark recesses of her brain for years. As space becomes available, other plots and characters have developed the pesky habit of moving in to take their place.

Ashlyn lives in the wilds of suburbia outside Montreal with her husband, two teenage daughters, and one loudmouth cat. When not writing, she looks for other excuses to neglect the housework, among them knitting, reading and wasting time on the internet in the guise of doing research.

She is represented by Sara Megibow of ktliterary.
