"Some boys will
keep it, some will break it, and some boys, they just won't want it. You gotta
be careful who you give your heart to..." Slate Declan
First loves, we all got them. Mine is Slate Declan. He was kind, gentle, and caring. Still, he managed to break my heart. So I put miles between us, and eventually, my heart healed.
I haven’t seen Slate in years, but a couple friends and I are going back to the Bayou for the summer. While I’m visiting my hometown, I’m going to look up Slate Declan. And I plan to break his heart, just as he did mine. I'll remind him of what he has lost, and then I'll prove to him that I’ve moved on.

It should be real easy, right?
Well, let me tell you, Slate Declan is not the same guy that I left behind. And there’s another problem. How do you break someone’s heart when they no longer have one?
Wow this story is one that is hard hitting. There are some many areas of life addressed in this story such as drugs, lost love, a person who is shattered both mentally and physically and finally redemption.
When I first started reading this book I didn't know if I could get into it but honestly it will squeeze your heart as you get further into the book.
Slate's character is portrayed as believable and you can feel how lost he is in pain, disgust with his disfigurement and drugs. The author shows how a sweet beautiful boy became a person everyone wanted to save in-spite of him not wanting to save himself.
Rayna is a woman that just makes you say "go get him". She will do anything to save him and then be willing to walk away. I love her spirit, love and strength but even more I love her fun-loving craziness that is blended into her seriousness.
The reader will enjoy this book but in a way that gets you thinking that people aren't always what they seem, they are deeper and worth knowing, saving and loving.

Kelly’s motto ~ "Bad boys, give 'em a little time and experience, and they will evolve into misbehaving men!" And what hot-blooded woman doesn’t want a naughty, all grown up bad boy?
