Hippolyta Royle is running for her life. Pursued by hounds on a cold rainy night, the heiress flags down a passing carriage and throws herself at the mercy of the coach's occupant. Whoever this handsome traveler may be, he is her only hope to escape a terrible fate. But should he agree to escort her to safety, he's in for much more than he bargained for.

At first Matthew Mortimer doesn't believe Hippolyta's story, that she's a fabulously wealthy heiress who's been kidnapped. He assumes she's a beggar, an actress, or worse. But once his new travel companion washes the mud from her surprisingly lovely face, and they share a breathtaking kiss, there is no turning back.

First we have intrigue, next distrust with some sensual tension, then throw in a mongoose. The author proceeds to keep the reader enthralled with this delightful entertaining story. I read this book just after reading and reviewing Duke of Sin (Maiden Lane, #10) so I was pleased to see some of the parts of that story show up in this story.

Hippolyta's character is quite charming and her feisty handling of Matthew caused me to chuckle several times throughout the book.

Matthew's no nonsense distrusting attitude towards Hippolyta added the right amount of tension between these two. I enjoyed his disbelief of who she was and her constantly shocking him with her intelligence. The part of the book where he put her in a life threatening position was handled in amazing scary detail and both their reactions after were written to perfection.

Ms Hoyt is the master of weaving an action packed romantic read while tossing in some humor to k
eep the reader off balanced. I give this book 5 STARS for the tension between Hippolyta and Matthew.
