A man controlled by his desires...
Infamous for his wild, sensual needs, Lazarus Huntington, Lord Caire, is searching for a savage killer in St. Giles, London's most notorious slum. Widowed Temperance Dews knows St. Giles like the back of her hand— she's spent a lifetime caring for its inhabitants at the foundling home her family established. Now that home is at risk.
A woman haunted by her past...
Caire makes a simple offer—in return for Temperance's help navigating the perilous alleys of St. Giles, he will introduce her to London's high society so that she can find a benefactor for the home. But Temperance may not be the innocent she seems, and what begins as cold calculation soon falls prey to a passion that neither can control—one that may well destroy them both.
A bargain neither could refuse.
Have you ever read a series that you liked so much you read it again and again, then bought the audible book so you could listen to it while you work. I loved this first book of the Maiden Lane series so much I did just that. The author does an intriguing bit of writing opening each chapter with a verse from King Lockedheart. It was remarkable how the verse tied into what would be happening in that chapter.
Lord Caire is such a dark character who grabbed my attention instantly. I wanted to know why he was so dry and cynical and why he had no emotions. The author created a very deep man who had so many secrets that I just had to know him intimately.
With Temperance I had great compassion for who she was and the secret she hide. Her character was written to draw the reader into her sweet spirit and wonder what could possibly be hidden in her past that would cause her to shut herself off to the outside world and allowing her to care.
The main characters were well rounded and intriguing. Each showed strength of character developed from their past experiences. The love scenes between them were mesmerizing. Secondary characters were numerous and fully developed creating many opportunities for additional books to the series.
I originally read the book when it came out in 2010 but was given the opportunity to read it again for review. While I love the written word and the mind can do amazing things with the words on the page while listening to the audible book I got emotionally involved. Hearing the characters talk added another dimension causing me to have a deeper connection to them.
