INTERVIEW with Author Dawn Marie Hamilton

Welcome Author Dawn Marie Hamilton…..
I have read all of your books and am excited to share your writing with the world. So pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee, tea or wine and join us.

How did you come up with the idea for Just Beyond the Garden Gate, A Highland Gardens Series?
During my corporate career, I often traveled alone and spent evenings reading romances. One of my preferred genres was historical time travel. While visiting Brussels on a business trip, I spotted a billboard with a hunky, kilted Highlander advertising whisky. I thought it would be fun to write a story about a burned out business consultant traveling back in time and meeting her dream Highlander. The idea floated around in the back of my mind for many years before I decided to seriously attempt to write the novel. It required a lot of research and was a ton of fun to write.

This series involves Scotland have you ever been there?

I’m of Scottish descent so I’ve always been fascinated by everything Scottish. I visited Scotland during college and fell in love with the place. That was a long time ago and I’m hoping to go back soon. In the meantime, I get my Scottish fix by attending Highland Games and festivals. I have especially enjoyed the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and Gathering of the Scottish Clans in North Carolina. And, I will be in the Celtic author’s tent, signing books, at the 2015 Frederick Celtic festival in Maryland in May.

What draws you to using time travel in your books?

The idea of traveling back in time fascinates me. I’ve always been intrigued by history and would love the opportunity to see how the peoples of different times and places really lived. One of my favorite movies is Somewhere in Time with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. I also really enjoyed Kate & Leopold with the very sexy Hugh Jackman and Meg Ryan. Both time travel movies.

Did you always know you wanted to write?

Yes and no. I jotted ramblings in a journal as a pre-teen and wrote short stories in high school. I contemplated majoring in journalism in college, but my math scores were much higher than my English. Parental pressure directed me toward computer science instead. Turns out, I ended up writing computer manuals and courseware during one point of my corporate career.

When did you start writing?

I started researching for Just Beyond the Garden Gate, my debut novel, about twelve years ago. It wasn’t until the first draft was complete that I learned there were rules involved in writing a romance novel. I joined RWA (Romance Writers of America) and a local chapter and started taking on-line workshops. I joined a critique group and rewrote the story about three times before it was ready to share with my editor.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

Let me first say that the hardest part in the writing process for me is getting the beginning the way I want it. I usually rework the beginning multiple times before passing a story on to my critique partners. Most of my stories are not written sequentially. I often get ideas for scenes and then need to figure out how to fit them together. Sometimes, I write the beginning and the end, and then the middle. My favorite part of the writing process is editing—working on getting the words right.

Do you have a writing schedule?

Here is another yes and no answer. I try to only write weekdays and spend weekends spending quality time with my husband, but sometimes the words are flowing and I need to get them out of my head before I forget them. I set daily goals, but sometimes the process of publishing and marketing gets in the way and throws my word-count productivity out the window. I strive for balance, but I haven’t quite mastered it yet.

What's the best thing about writing?

I think some famous author once said this, but can’t remember who. Anyhow, the best part of writing is having written. It feels fabulous to write ‘the end’ on a new novel and then go back and read the story as if I didn’t write it.

What's the worst thing about writing?

The dreaded writer’s block. It doesn’t happen to me often. When it does, I go into total procrastination mode and need to rein myself in.

How much time is spent researching in comparison to actually writing?

It really depends on the series/novels. A substantial amount of Scottish historical research was done for the first book in the Highland Gardens series, Just Beyond the Garden Gate. Probably about 50% of the overall development and writing time. Fortunately, much of that research carries through to the rest of the books with only a minor amount of fact-finding required at each writing. On the other end of the spectrum, Sea Panther, the first book in the Crimson Storm series, also took a considerable amount of research. Again, probably about 50% of the overall development and writing time. Florida panthers, Voodoo/Hoodoo, the Bermuda Triangle, the Jacobite rising of 1715, Jamaica history, and pirates were some of the topics researched. Each book in the series will be very different and will each require a considerable amount of research. Therefore each book will take longer than average to develop, write, and reach market.

How do you keep your characters separate when you write more than one series?

Each character has a different personality and they each have a dedicated index card containing their physical attributes and idiosyncrasies, which are used during writing. However, sometimes it is difficult not to use the wrong name when working on two books at the same time. I accidently used Robert instead of Patrick in Just Beyond the Garden Gate. Luckily, we caught the mistake in second round edits.

What do you like to read?

Romance. My favorite genres are historical time travel, regency, and paranormal.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

R Ward, J T Geissinger, Jessica Andersen, Eloise James, Lynn Kurland, Terry Spear—just to name a few. I could go on and on.

What are your favorite things to do?

I have more hobbies than time. When not writing or doing writing related things, I like to camp, hike, bicycle, and canoe with my husband. I love to garden and was a master gardener in a previous life. Enjoy cooking and baking. And, of course, love to read.

Any advice for someone who wants to write a novel?

Join writers groups. Find critique partners. Dare to dream.

Thank you Dawn Marie for spending some of your valuable writing time with us. I look forward to your next book "Just Wait for Me (Coming Summer  2015)".

Excerpt

Cavanaugh looked up through the trees, checking the light level. It had taken most of the day to find a vehicle, purchase all the equipment they needed, and drive the seven hours up the track. In just over an hour, it would be dark. They would have to stop and make camp. Near to the river would be the best place to set up the small tent he had purchased and start a fire, but also the most dangerous. Countless predators made the forest their home, big cats among them, and many of them hunted along the water where their prey would come to drink.
He could smell them in the area. Tigers. Leopards. Even clouded leopards. None of them would take well to him and Eloise being in their territory. The tigers were the biggest threat. They had been known to take human prey in the past, when times had been tough for them, and had spread their territory far and wide, even up to altitude in places, clashing with the territory of the snow leopards.
The trail ended two miles deeper into the forest, at a large pool that glittered at the base of a short waterfall. This was as far as the locals went, coming here to try their luck fishing. He had met a few once, years ago, on his way down from the mountain. They hadnít seemed surprised to see someone coming from a direction where nature prevailed and no humans ventured. He suspected that the legends the locals believed in were based on his pride and those legends were woven deep into their traditions and religion. They had known what he was, but they respected him and his kind.
Eloise distracted him from his memories by clambering up the enormous boulders that formed a wall ahead of him. He stared at her backside, cupped tightly in her trekking trousers. He might have purchased a size smaller than he should have, but he had known she wouldnít dare complain about how tight and revealing they were. It was the first time he felt that being an alpha was a perk, not a punishment.
She leaped to another boulder and scaled the next one with ease.
Snow leopard shifters were agile climbers in both of their forms, and he had always loved climbing with her, scaling the dangerous mountains that surrounded the village in the hidden valley high above this forest. There were ledges on the mountains that offered the most incredible and breathtaking views across the Himalayas.
Her boot slipped and he was behind her in a single leap, his hands pressed against her backside to stop her from falling. She gasped and turned wide honey-coloured eyes on him, a blush climbing her cheeks before she recovered and stole her body from his grasp, ruining the moment. She hauled herself back towards the rocks and up them, away from his hands.
Hands that ached to touch her again, to explore every inch of her at his leisure, together with his lips.
ìDamned new boots,î she muttered and was more careful as she clambered up the rocks, placing each foot with caution.
When she had reached the top, she looked back down at him. He grinned and ascended the treacherous rocks in a few leaps, using his superior strength and agility to make easy work of it. She huffed under her breath and stalked on ahead of him, evidently not impressed by his display of manliness.
Cavanaugh shrugged and followed her, his senses split between her and their surroundings now that they were heading deeper into the forest, away from the farmland and the humans.
He closed the distance between them as the terrain turned hilly, the ascents and descents steep and muddy, making it tough going as they continued to track the river through the forest covering the valley. He helped her as much as she would let him, growing increasingly frustrated whenever she refused to accept his assistance. Back in the day, she had never hesitated to take his hand when he had offered it or his help whenever she had slipped. Was it because she could only see him as her prideís alpha now?
He wasnít that male, not when he was with her.
He was just Cavanaugh.
The air grew humid as they followed the river. The evening light danced across its rippling surface, making it look like liquid gold. He drew in a deep breath, catching the scents of the animals and all the different plants and trees, refreshing his memory of this place he had called home for a century.
It was beautiful, but tarnished now.
His reason for being here, and everything that had happened, had ruined it for him, stealing something away from the stunning scenery. The mountains called to him, rising high above the forest that surrounded him, their snow-capped peaks piercing the golden sky, but he no longer felt the deep need to answer that call, to rush up to their pinnacles and see the world as they did.
He was happier down here, in the forest.
Truthfully, he was happier miles away from this place that no longer felt like his home.
Eloise looked back at him, the sight of her soothing him and chasing away his heavy thoughts.
The forest drew back from the river ahead of them, leaving a wide earth bank on their side that gave way to pebbles and then rounded stones by the water.
ìWe can camp ahead.î Cavanaugh scanned the forest with his senses. ìIíve camped here a few times.î
It smelled different now though. The territories of the cats that made this area their home had shifted.
Movement across the river caught his eye and his gaze snapped there, his senses on high alert. A small leopard cat broke cover, spotted him and dashed back into the scrub. They werenít much bigger than a domestic cat and were definitely not a threat to him and Eloise.
She set her backpack down in the middle of the dirt bank and rubbed her shoulders. He would do that for her if she asked. Gods, he would do it for her if she didnít ask. He would do anything to get his hands back on her and break down the damned wall that stood between them. He dumped his backpack and stretched, a sliver of pleasure flowing through him as he loosened up. He wasnít looking forward to the ascent ahead of him, not with so much gear. He would have to stash most of it somewhere rather than trying to carry it up the mountain path.
His gaze drifted along the wide slow river, hopping from boulder to boulder that dotted the water, and then up over the trees to the mountains in the distance ahead of him.
He was running out of time.
There had to be a way to get Eloise to look at him and see him as the man she had known all her life, the one who belonged to her if she would have him, and not her alpha.
He sighed and set the tent up as he pondered that, and then left her to handle the fire as he looked at the river. It had been a hard trek and he needed to wash up before settling down to a delicious meal of protein bars. The crystal clear water was just too inviting to resist.
He wanted to cool off with a swim.
If all went to plan, Eloise would join him.

Books in the Eternal Mates paranormal romance series:

~ My Review 5 STARS ~~~~~~~~~~~

I first meet Cavanaugh when I reviewed Felicity Heaton’s “Hunted by a Jaguar” and I knew immediately that I wanted to know more about him. There was something about him being quiet, ferocious and standoffish that seemed to call to me. I wanted his story and I just knew it had to be about a women. This book did not disappoint me in fact it went far above my expectations.

His fated mate, Eloise is shown as someone who loves Cavanaugh but knows her place in the pride. Her character is refreshing because even though she is beta she is portrayed with strong character strength, which is very appealing for readers. This book shows her struggle with loving him and her willingness to put the pack first then walk away because betas can’t mate alphas.

This book is written from Cavanaugh’s perspective and I really enjoy how his mind works through problems and his struggle to do the right thing and claim his fated mate.

The author includes some additional excitement in the storyline with a cruel alpha that is now in charge of Cavanaugh’s pride. The fight’s scenes are written well and the description of it is sure to pull you in like it did me.

I give this book 5 hearts.

Review: Adventurous Me ~ You, Me and Us Series by Deanndra Hall

Adventurous Me, Book 1

~ Genre ~ Contemporary romance, Erotica, BDSM

~ Audience ~ 18+

~ Blurb ~

"Boring? Tiresome? Predictable? We'll see about that."

When Trish's husband of almost 30 years announces that he's leaving her because she's "boring," she sets out to find an adventure. Her attempt to drink her heartbreak away drops her onto a handsome gentleman who invites her to have an adventure, and Trish can't help but say yes.

She embarks on that adventure, but her path keeps crossing with that of another - Clint Winstead, a Dominant at the club, Bliss, and the one person in the place who seems to despise her. And that's fine with Trish. After all, there are plenty of other Doms there who want to play.

But when an annual event at the club throws Trish and Clint together for two weeks, both of them are horrified, not by the pairing, but by the feelings they're trying hard to deny. As the time passes, it's harder and harder to deny what they know is true - that is, until one nearly-tragic incident that almost changes both their lives irreparably. And when Trish realizes that continuing on with her commitment could cost her the ultimate - her life - she knows that it has to end. But does it?

Trish is the queen of second chances. But this second chance might just come at a price too high to pay. A little adventure is a good thing, but perhaps she's gotten far more adventure than she can handle.

WARNING: This book contains explicit sexual situations and BDSM themes. It is not suitable for readers under the age of 18. Reader discretion is advised.

~ My Review 4 to 5 STARS ~~~~~~~~~~~

Trish and Clint the main characters in this book along with the secondary characters of Dave, Steffan and Sheila create a believable storyline of broken hearts, forgiveness, moving on and love. This book evolves around the club called Bliss so there is lots of very erotic scene playing but for me I loved the interwoven story of Trish and Clint.

I know several women who have been in the same position Trish was in and the author did a sound job with her presentation of this situation. I love how she built Trish’s character from the devastating moment that her husband shattered her world to the moment that she honored herself and walked away from a possible new love and a damaging situation.

Clint struggles with his past and moving forward into a relationship with Trish. As I read this story I knew that I would like Clint right away but there is a part in the book when he does something that should make me hate him and all I could think of is my heart hurts because he is so broken.

This author is gifted in the area of showing broken people with inner strength in her storyline. She shows how it is possible for even in the brokenness to be of strong character. I recommend that you read this book and move to the next of the series Unforgettable You.

I rate this book 4 Hearts for the read and 5 Hearts for the heat factor.

~ About The Author ~

For as long as I can remember, I've been a writer . . .

and it has served me well. I wrote for local publications, wrote marketing and advertising materials, wrote for academic publications, and eventually grew jaded with the writing profession as I often watched others take credit for my hard work. I retreated into the world of 3-D art in the fiber and textile mediums and hid out in a world of colors and textures. But, truth is, there was always a story or two in my head. It wasn't until Nikki and I met in my imagination that I decided it was time to let those stories out, and I'm glad I did. My readers now get to enjoy the fruits of my imagination and, believe me, it runs wild!

On the personal side, I've been happily married to my lover and best friend for over thirty years, and I have two wonderful adult kids who've blessed me with two excellent choices of life partners. When I'm not writing, I'm playing with my three crazy little dogs, hiking in a local recreation area, kayaking, working out at the gym, tending my herbs, cooking, or doing some kind of research.
But I'd really rather be writing!
