War makes strange bedfellows.

I, Gaius Domitus, one-eyed rebel dragon king of the Provinces, know that better than most, since I have to fight off half my ungrateful family on a regular basis to keep law and order here in my lands. But I never expected to have to consort with a barbarian human woman.

Kachka is beautiful, if you like them fierce—and of course I do. But she keeps complaining about how spoiled and decadent I am, and how a feared Daughter of the Steppes has no time for foolish dragons. I think she likes my eye patch, though. It is quite dashing. With death always at our tails, we take our passion like we take our allies. As they say, love the barbarian you’re with…

Wow just wow. I have never read anything by G.A. Aiken but I have read reviews, watched the book award polls and talked with other bloggers about her books. I knew I just had to read something by this author and I am glad to finally get my hands on one of her books.

The fantasy world that this series evolves around is described in clear dramatic detail. It creates a world where women rule and though some men may rule they defer to their strong women in a manner that amused me. I love the balance the author has in her writing where the women are strong, abrupt, decisive and yet they are able to love their man who is also strong, loving and actually quite funny in some of the scenes as they appear to be deferring to the women.

Kachka is great. She has no respect for man she just wants to fight and hunt. Her character was so abrupt at times that I was thinking whoo! Further in the story I got why she acted this way and I understood the dynamics of the various people, their areas they lived and how they acted.

Gaius is a mighty warrior but it was refreshing to see how much he loved his sister and later Kachka. The best part of his character was that he didn't try to change his women. He sat back and protected and even laughed at them. I got a kick out of how he looked at what was going on around him and got great humor from it. Even when it got him in hot water with Kachka.

I will read more of this author. I want to know what is happening and where they came from so it looks like I have some books I will need to get that lead up to this story.

An ARC copy was gifted in exchange for an honest opinion via Netgalley.
