Cassie Gambol is on the run. In what seems like another lifetime, her ex-husband nearly ended her life and effectively ended her successful career as a vascular surgeon. But even though the justice system found him guilty of attempted murder, he fled while awaiting sentencing and Carly Sunderland became Cassie Gambol. Fleeing Los Angeles, she heads to small and off the map Petal, Georgia to start her life again.

Shane Chase, a man whos held himself away from commitment since his fiance dumped him several years before knows the beautiful newcomer is hiding something. He's wildly attracted to her strength and her underlying vulnerability as well. But the last thing Cassie wants is another big, overwhelming man who wants to control her life.

A battle begins between Shane, who knows what he wants and Cassie, who tries to keep a distance between herself and the very handsome sheriff. But Cassies ex is back and he wants her dead.

Warning, this title contains the following: explicit sex, graphic language, some violent situations.

A powerful example of surviving spousal abuse and learning to open one's heart to a worthy man.

Stories that impact the reader are rare. This book is one because it shows how a woman can come from such a scary tragic marriage and survive with a lot of ups and downs. I like that the author shows Cassie's venerability as well and her strength to deal with her fears to become a stronger less fearful person. It doesn't make it all fairytale. It shows the struggle that is real in these situations.

Mr. alpha Shane is the wrong personality to fall in love with Cassie but he is what she needs most to keep her safe. There are lessons in this book for him as well. Lessons on toning his energy down and not plowing through situations. Lessons on not assuming you know everything and are always right.

It is an enjoyable rewarding read so for this reason I give it 4 stars.

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.

Lauren Dane has been writing stories since she was able to use a pencil, and before that she used to tell them to people. Of course, she still talks nonstop, and through wonderful fate and good fortune, she’s now able to share what she writes with others. It’s a wonderful life!

The basics: Lauren is a mom, a partner, a best friend and a daughter. Living in the rainy but beautiful Pacific Northwest, she spends her late evenings writing like a fiend when she finally wrestles all of her kids to bed.
